Four Weddings, & a Funeral

... Teaching Ideas For Your Next Lesson.

In the interests of balance and as a counterpoint to my last lesson ideas post, here are a few lesson ideas for teaching adults and teens on the topics of royalty, wedding celebrations, and other important milestones in life.

The True Cost of The Royal Family Explained

...Or Perhaps Not?

Researching the background to these quirky little videos could make an interesting webquest for use with higher level learners.

Ask students to work in groups to research the claims made in the first video and then present their findings as a team, before playing the second video to the whole class.

You could follow this activity up with a debate about whether or not the British Royal Family earns their keep, or should be abolished to pave the way for Great Britain becoming a republic.
... or alternatively, debate whether the royal family should have been made to pay for their own wedding, instead of expecting the British taxpayer to foot the bill.

Indian Wedding in London

Highlights of an Indian (Hindu) wedding filmed in London. A lovely piece of video footage from real life that could be used as an introduction for a lesson about wedding customs in different cultures around the world.

Gay Wedding (Civil Partnership) in Bath

Another wonderful little video short, that would be great to use in a lesson about wedding customs in different cultures, or about equal rights for gay people.

Funeral

There may be times when learners want to discuss issues surrounding death and dealing with the loss of friends and family. This heartwarming, positive video could be used to introduce the topic and act as an introduction for looking at the way that different people and cultures deal with death and dying, and celebrating the lives of loved ones who have passed away.

Muriel's Wedding

One of my favourite films of all time, this trailer has tons of potential to use as a warm-up for talking about families, friendship, weddings and life in general with adult learners. It contains some mild nudity and a smattering of rude words, so make sure you watch it all the way through if you are considering using it to check it will be suitable for your learners!
